How to choose a CBSE school in Kharar

Kharar and the villages around it now have many schools that call themselves the best. The questions below work for any of them, and most of the answers can be checked from home. We have added our own answers after each one so you can compare.

1. Is the school really affiliated to CBSE?

Every CBSE school has an affiliation number and a school code. Ask for both, then look the school up on CBSE’s own SARAS list of affiliated schools. Check that the name, address and level (secondary or senior secondary) match what the school tells you.

2. Does it publish its Mandatory Public Disclosure?

CBSE asks every affiliated school to publish a standard disclosure on its website: affiliation and recognition letters, safety certificates, fee structure, results and staff numbers. A school that hides these is a warning sign.

3. What were the board results, in numbers?

“Excellent results” means little. Ask how many students sat the Class X and XII board exams and how many passed, for each of the last three years.

At Skonis: Class X: 9 of 9 passed in 2022-23, 11 of 11 in 2023-24 and 23 of 23 in 2025-26. Class XII: 10 of 10 in 2025-26.

4. How many teachers are there, and how qualified?

Ask for the teacher-student ratio and how many teachers are PGT (post-graduate), TGT (trained graduate) and PRT (primary) teachers. More attention per child matters most in the early years.

At Skonis: 18 teachers (7 PGT, 6 TGT, 5 PRT) and an overall ratio of one teacher to 25 students.

5. Is the building certified safe?

Ask to see a valid building safety certificate under the National Building Code, a fire safety certificate, and water, health and sanitation certificates, and check whether there is first aid on campus.

6. Who looks after children’s wellbeing?

Children learn better when someone is watching out for how they feel, not only how they score. Ask whether there is a counsellor and how a parent can reach them.

7. Is there a bus from our area?

Ask which routes the school runs, where the nearest stop is, and whether younger children have their own route.

8. Are the fees clear and written down?

Ask for the fee structure in writing, including admission, tuition and transport charges, so there are no surprises later in the year.

9. What happens outside the classroom?

Look for a working library, science and computer labs, and regular sport, music, dance and art, not just rooms with those names on the door.

10. Can we visit and meet the teachers?

Never choose a school from photos alone. Visit on a working day, see the classrooms in use, and check the admission age for your child’s class.

At Skonis: Visit Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm or Saturday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Minimum age on 1 April: Nursery 3, LKG 4, UKG 5, Grade 1 6.
